| Description | This property describes the bacterial preprotein translocase Sec. The analogous process occurs in eukaryotes and archaea (little studied in the archaea), but the component proteins are different enough not to be described by the same set of hidden Markov models. SecB is a cytosolic export-specific chaperone in E. coli and some related species, but is not broadly distributed. SecA, the ATPase that powers the translocase, is a peripheral membrane protein. SecY, SecE, and SecG form the heterotrimeric translocase, although SecG is not essential at some temperatures. SecD, SecG, and YajC form an accessory complex that may prevent backsliding of proteins being translocated, and may not be essential proteins. |
